Redefine Communications’ Role in CSR

On Wednesday, 1st December, CEC will host the first in a three-part webinar series.  During the series we’ll highlight some of the most progressive thinking we’ve found around Corporate Social Responsibility.  For the first event, we’ll focus on innovative approaches to CSR strategy and the resultant challenges facing communicators.  CEC members, sign up today.

Traditionally, demanding stakeholder groups have forced organizations to adopt CSR activities.  As such, CSR has grown up  “separate from profit maximization”; and therefore, viewed only as corollary to the business.  The best companies we’ve seen in CEC are shifting to a new role–helping  the organization spot and create opportunities for business growth that simultaneously benefit society.  This is called “Creating Shared Value.”

Two genuine pioneers in the CSR field will join us for this event to share their experiences and answer your questions.

  1. Mark Kramer is a consultant and senior fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business in Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Mark is co-author, with Professor Michael E. Porter, of influential Harvard Business Review articles such as “Strategy and Society: The Link Between Competitive Advantage and Corporate Social Responsibility” (2006), in which they outline the concept of “Shared Value” (indeed, you can click here for a video of Porter articulating the concept of Shared Value).
  2. Niels Christiansen is the VP of Public Affairs at Nestle.  Niels was one of the first to adopt the Shared Value framework, and made the high-profile transition, at Nestle, from traditional CSR to CSV (Creating Shared Value) to emphasize the shift.  CEC has already blogged about Nestle’s adoption of the CSV framework, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from the instigator of the project at Nestle.

Mark and Niels will offer the perfect balance of theory and practice during this session.  Mark will outline the concept of “Shared Value” and describe how businesses need to align their organizational strategy around those key areas in which they can have the greatest impact.  Niels will discuss the practical implementation of this concept and how the communications function at Nestle has organized the business to realize this strategy.

The webinar is on Wednesday 1st December, at 8am PST / 11am EST / 4pm GMT / 5pm CET.  It lasts for one hour. Register a place for you, or members of your team, here.
